Today Needs Boots. And Black. And a (gasp) Skirt.

The way I dress is changing.

Maybe it's because I'm 40. Maybe it's because I'm crawling out of the day-to-day trench work of mothering young children. Maybe it's my friend Megan's influence.

Whatever.

My style is emerging.

And I like it.

Today, I have parent-teacher conferences, coffee with friends, karate and Target on my schedule. It's not a day for staying home, for being cozy in jeans and a t-shirt.

Today needs a take-charge attitude, a bit of sass.

Today needs boots. It needs black.

And because I'm feeling a little French thanks to this post, I paired it with a skirt, which is very uncharacteristic of me. I'm normally a jeans girl. Like, always a jeans girl.

But I like it. I like this outfit.

I hardly recognize myself.

Yet I've never felt more like me.

(Is it OK to wear the boots with socks showing like this? I think so. Corey was a little thrown.)

Today, I'm dressing for the day I want to have, not the day that wants to have me. Want to play? My friend Abby issues the challenge every Wednesday.

  1. Cute! Absolutely show your socks! It's all over Pinterest. I'm still mad at myself for letting a 7 year old talk me out of buying a cute hat the other day.

  2. YES show your socks. Are you kidding me?!?!? Did you ever see the boot sock tutorial I did on my blog? You could have boot socks in every color. SHOW THEM OFF! It's the look. ;)

You're so cute and sassy. Okay, gotta know: did Corey take the picture or is the camera precariously balancing on some post or car while you have it on the timer setting? I ask because I used to do the "What I Wore Wednesday" challenge each week over at The Pleated Poppy, and felt like a complete TOOL having Gary take my picture. So after one time, I stopped and did it myself. I felt lame saying, "Here! Take my picture!" So why don't you move down the street and we can take pictures of each other every day, okay? :-)

And p.s. I like the necklace too, sassy girl.

    1. Angie, I WAS THINKING OF YOU AND YOUR TUTORIAL WHEN I GOT DRESSED THIS MORNING! (All caps totally appropriate.) Which is what gave me the confidence to do this.

And yes, Corey took the picture. It helps that he likes the outfit. :)

P.S. I would love to be your neighbor.

    1. I feel a little funny about all the LOOK AT ME, honestly. But I never feel funny about it when I read others blogs. So I'm stretching myself a little.

(And thanks for your encouragement, inspiration and support, fashion jedi!)

    1. Do they?!? I'm thinking I need to get some colored ones. Or follow Angie's tutorial and make some that are more fun.

  6. Proud of you, Kelly - SO CUTE! I MEAN... well, you know what I mean. ;-) It's the boots that MAKE this. They break the rules and there you go, all ready to take on the world or else. GO YOU.

(I hope your day went okay!)

    1. My day went well, thanks for asking. And while I don't want to overplay the power of clothes: I give a lot of credit to those boots! I know EXACTLY what you mean.

  7. It's all in the details and your details of those SOCKS (hawt) and those red lips (yes I noticed) are ROCKING. I love this so much. I love that you're doing this. It encourages me along so much. xoxo

    1. YOU NOTICED THE RED LIPS?!? That made me smile so big, because YES they are red, with a swipe of my normal bronzy pink brushed over to help me get used to it.

It's good to be stretched, yes? We are so much more than our appearances. But these bodies are gifts. It's good to remember that. Some days, getting dressed is worship. It's saying thank you.

  9. You're so gorgeous, Kel. You were when I first met you when you were still a teenager (18 or 19, I believe?) and I was a star-struck little pup at 13 (star-struck because I thought you were SO cool and SO beautiful and SO profound and SO hilarious and SO......I could go on and on). And now that I've known and loved you for over 2 decades, I can say without a doubt that your inner beauty far outshines your outer beauty. You're just ravishing all the way around!

But forget all the deep stuff. You look like one hot mama in that outfit. Rarrrrr. ;)

P.S. LOVE the socks. I do knee highs with Mary Janes (so Corey would REALLY look at me funny with all that sock exposure), and I do love me some cowboy boots. I think you'd be proud if you saw my work wardrobe. Lots of boots, skirts, and dresses. I love being a social worker. It means I have to dress up....but the way that social workers dress up....with sass and flair and personality....no pant suits for moi!

    1. Do you even know how much this comment made me smile? Everything about it made me smile.

I totally see you dressing the way you describe, not only because it's YOU but because I've seen some of it with my own eyes via Instagram. (Social media for the win!) I love how your style has taken shape. And the cowboy boots you own make me swoon. And the scarves. Why don't we live together again and share wardrobes?!?
